Phoebe Palmer on faith

 

 

Phoebe Palmer lived during the period of 1807 – 1874. She was a great woman of faith and many of her ideas of faith were passed down to other ministers who benefited from her teachings.

 

This is what she said:

 

There are laws which govern God’s “moral universe” just as there are laws governing the physical universe. This structure of moral or spiritual cause and effect is revealed primarily in the Bible… If one understands these laws and acts in accordance with them, it is certain that the designated means will achieve the desired ends… Faith’s “effects must of necessity follow, because the principles by which the kingdom of grace is governed are unchangeable.”

The experience of EW Kenyon concerning righteousness

 

EW Kenyon discovered that he is righteous and no longer had to perform even as a Christian to earn the favor and blessing of God. He had a similar experience to that of Martin Luther who uncovered “justification by faith alone”. Here is what he said in his diary:

 

Strange, I had never noticed it before. God Himself was to become my Righteousness the moment that I accepted Christ and confessed Him as my Lord. Then I remembered Romans 10:10, “For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

Then 2 Corinthians 5:21, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” I couldn’t believe it at first. I struggled for days and days on this scripture. I knew that if I became the righteousness of God in Christ that I would never again depend on experiences. I had arrived. The thing that my heart had craved was here, but it would never become real to me until I confessed it before the world.

That Sunday morning, when I dared to say, “I am the righteousness of God in Christ,” was when I experienced what it meant. A strange quietness filled my whole being. A joy that I had never before experienced, filled my heart.

EW Kenyon Doctrinal Statement in 1899

 

In 1899, a man of God by the name of EW Kenyon made a bold doctrinal stand for his Christian beliefs. You need to understand that the majority of the Christian crowd at that time did not have the revelation of the Word like we have today. There was a lack of understanding about the work of the Holy Spirit and the grace of God, yet one man, Kenyon, made a stand.

 

Here is what he believe:

1. We insist that the Bible is the Word of God
2. Absolute obedience to the Word of God
3. That men live what they profess
4. We insist that men are saved body, soul, and spirit from sin but are not saved while in sin
5. That God will and does fulfill every promise in His Word, when we meet His requirements
6. That the God of Israel is the God of today, and does the same mighty works today that He did then
7. That Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and that the same signs that followed the apostles, today follow those who believe.

 

Would you dare to believe in God’s Word even if it goes against the “grain”?

Patricia King and the spectacular

I was recently asked about Patricia King and the people who follows after their ministry at "Extreme Prophecy".

I posted the following reply, and I hope it may enlighten you too. This is only my personal opinion and no offense is meant.


I have listened to Patricia King's, Bob Jones' , Todd Bentley's and Joshua Mills's messages before. Their teaching centers around the spectacular and less on the Word. They use a lot of their personal experiences with angels, visions, dreams, gold dust, oil. I believed God can do all these no doubt, and gold dust have fallen on my body before. Others have seen these but I am careful to always point them to Jesus and not to the signs. People need to have faith in God's Word ONLY and not in other people's experiences. When Christians need help for their problems such as healing, they cannot believe based on the God who heals others, but they need to believe God based on the Word of God for themselves. Only then will they build on the right personal fellowship with God.

As for sound teaching, there are many others who gives sound teaching such as Andrew Wommack, EW Kenyon, Lester Sumrall, and of course, nothing is better than studying the Word for one own self. Due to the shortage of time in each day to study the Word, i have to prioritized my time, so i choose others instead of Patricia King etc. Once in a while, i do listen to their stories just to keep up to date of what they are doing, but because i desire deeper, i have to study the Word myself.

Todd Bentley have fallen out of the limelight after he admitted to a relationship with another lady besides his wife. Since then, he has divorced his wife and under supervision by other ministers. His gospel is faulty because he takes daily instructions from his angel Emma, and magnifies his angel more than the Word or even Jesus. Some people like these type of stories but i don't. I believe in angels very much, but God is the one who instructs angels to minister to us, not the other way round.

As a guide, I do most of my own study and cross referencing them with other solid New Covenant teachers.

List of Consequences of Immorality

 

 

 

Following the confession of South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford of committing adultery, I came across a list of consequences of adultery compiled by two men, Randy Alcorn (one of my daughter’s favorite writers) and Alan Hlavka, a pastor at Good Shepherd Community Church. These two men did not commit adultery, but they came up with a list of possible consequences that can happen if ever they think about committing adultery.

 

I thought that by looking at this list, it will bring home  the message much more than many, many sermons.

Personalized List of Anticipated Consequences of Immorality

• Grieving my Lord; displeasing the One whose opinion most matters.
• Dragging into the mud Christ's sacred reputation.
• Loss of reward and commendation from God.
• Having to one day look Jesus in the face at the judgment seat and give an account of why I did it.
• Forcing God to discipline me in various ways.
• Following in the footsteps of men I know of whose immorality forfeited their ministry and caused me to shudder. List of these names: ______
• Suffering of innocent people around me who would get hit by my shrapnel (a la Achan).
• Untold hurt to Nanci, my best friend and loyal wife.
• Loss of Nanci's respect and trust.
• Hurt to and loss of credibility with my beloved daughters, Karina and Angela. ("Why listen to a man who betrayed Mom and us?")
• If my blindness should continue or my family be unable to forgive, I could lose my wife and my children forever.
• Shame to my family. (The cruel comments of others who would invariably find out.)
• Shame to my church family.
• Shame and hurt to my fellow pastors and elders. List of names: ______
• Shame and hurt to my friends, and especially those I've led to Christ and discipled. List of names: ______
• Guilt awfully hard to shake—even though God would forgive me, would I forgive myself?
• Plaguing memories and flashbacks that could taint future intimacy with my wife.
• Disqualifying myself after having preached to others.
• Surrender of the things I am called to and love to do—teach and preach and write and minister to others. Forfeiting forever certain opportunities to serve God. Years of training and experience in ministry wasted for a long period of time, maybe permanently.
• Being haunted by my sin as I look in the eyes of others, and having it all dredged up again wherever I go and whatever I do.
• Undermining the hard work and prayers of others by saying to our community "this is a hypocrite—who can take seriously anything he and his church have said and done?"
• Laughter, rejoicing and blasphemous smugness by those who disrespect God and the church (2 Samuel 12:14).
• Bringing great pleasure to Satan, the Enemy of God.
• Heaping judgment and endless problems on the person I would have committed adultery with.
• Possible diseases (pain, constant reminder to me and my wife, possible infection of Nanci, or in the case of AIDS, even causing her death, as well as mine.)
• Possible pregnancy, with its personal and financial implications.
• Loss of self-respect, discrediting my own name, and invoking shame and lifelong embarrassment upon myself.

Samuel Logan Brengle

 

 

One of the pioneers of Salvation Army was Samuel Logan Brengle.  The SA of his times was so different from the SA of today. Their emphasis was  on the supernatural preaching of the Word with signs and wonders  and miracles. Healings and deliverances were daily occurrences. Today, SA seems interested in social work and community services, which are good in itself, but it may not save souls. Only the gospel of Jesus save souls from the kingdom of darkness.

Your spirit strengthens the body

Don’t let Faith die

This post was written for Charisma (one of my sites), but I find it worthwhile to repeat it here for a different audience. New book: Roadmap for Teens (Based on Asian Values)

Hallelujah! After much deliberation and correction here and there, this book is at last on the bookstore shelves.

What a title! What an important cultural deliberation that must not be overlooked in the midst of the tsunami of Western influence. We Asians must learn how to stand up for what we believe and what we want our present and future generations to know what we stand for.

Our Teens today are lost in the midst of profanity, sexual innuendos, rudeness, foul language that are amidst the new Hollywood scenario. I want to bring back the family values, the moral correctness, the general hygiene of body language and pleasantries that are so often overlooked and buried by the mud thrown at us by the entertainment media.

May God save us from this corroding culture that pollute teens, destroys families, breakup marriages, and give us a victory of good-over-evil.

"Roadmap for Teens" Cover Designer - Phillip Khoo

I wish to express my sincere gratitude to brother Phillip Khoo from FGA Centre Penang, who was so gracious as to design my Book Cover free of charge. I had spoken at FGA Centre twice and had a cordial friendship with Phillip. I found out from Ps Heok Cheow that he was previously into advertising and publicity before going full-time in the church Media and Sound Department. His secular expertise was indeed a great benefit for the church and towards the input for the book cover.

That really solved my problems on the design and the burden of extra expenses.

Also, he was instrumental in assisting me to change the title of the book from "Advice for Kids before they get married" to "Roadmap for Teens". The new title is refreshing and exciting as well.

Keeping my fingers cross as the final copy goes through the press.
